Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced a list of 1,958 honor roll student-athletes for the 2008-09 academic year. That reflected a seven percent increase from the previous year.
Student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA for selection.
UCF led all schools with 224 student-athletes on the list followed by SMU (209), East Carolina (190), Rice (183), Tulsa (176), Marshall (172), Memphis (164), UAB (128), Houston (117), UTEP (116), Southern Miss (113) and Tulane (107).
"We did a great job as an institution to finish sixth in the conference in total number of student-athletes. It's a credit to our athletes, coaches and staff," said Tara Helton, director of the Buck Harless Student-Athlete Program at Marshall.
"When you take into consideration the five institutions that finished ahead of us in total numbers sponsor more sports and have more student-athletes than we do, our total is even more impressive."
