By default, the library takes small resolution versions of some photos (thumbnails) and uses them as thumbnails in a gallery index screen.

Clicking on one of the thumbs will show the image at a higher resolution.

All the gallery facets from thumbnail size, position, design style, etc, can be adjusted to fit any project needs.
