W3C's Page Visibility API defines a standard for site developers to programmatically detect the current visibility state of the page.
By page visibility and it's state, the API refers to minimized browser windows, active windows, maximized browser window - but not in the user's focus, locked screens on mobile devices, etc..
The jquery.pagevisibility plugin provides a common interface for dealing with this API the same way across multiple browsers, smoothing out various browser vendor differences that might make development a little bit tedious and time consuming.
