In a rough economic time like this one, who couldn't use some extra cash?
There's billions of dollars of unclaimed cash out there.
Welcome to the wonderful little secret called unclaimed property: It could be an old paycheck, stock note, or inheritance that’s owed to you. When no one claims these valuables, they’re eventually turned over to a state— where they may languish for years. On “Dateline,” we showed people who were happy to discover they had forgotten treasure.
Most states don’t have the staff come out and find you. But if it’s there, you can find it on your own.
A lot of people in the U.S. may be rich and not even know it!
"Dateline" is doing a "You Might Be Rich" special series, looking into the millions — even possibly billions — of dollars in old paychecks, inheritance, stock notes and other forms of unclaimed property throughout the states. If no one claims them, the states take them over. wOw told you last month there’s about $33 billion sitting around. That’s a lot of cash!
If you live in New York, you can check for yourself here. There’s also a website, www.missingmoney.com, where you can check. That site comes courtesy of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. NBC’s "Dateline’s" Tiki Barber gave one New Orleans woman some of the best news of her life: She was the recipient of $237,000 from a man she met years ago who passed away. The state of Louisiana had been holding on to it for 17 years.
Watch Tiki Barber’s "Dateline" video below, and check out how you can find out if you have a secret unknown stash somewhere.
